In "Slash/Back," an evil spacecraft crashes just beyond the Arctic Circle, and a group of Inuit females equipped only with their wits and a collection of traditional hunting and fishing gear end up saving humanity. The heroes and victims are typically rather generic in low-budget alien invasion films, while the alien danger is what pulls audiences. 

Although the novel's far-north location and somewhat modern monster effects don't hurt, Native director Nyla Innuksuk flips that equation inside out and makes this spirited group of save-the-world youngsters the major incentive to see her movie. Before going on to humans, aliens arrive and start colonizing some of the local creatures. 

Since Roger Corman employed this scenario in The Beast with a Million Eyes in 1955, it has been a recurrent theme in the genre. We even have a scenario where they debate whether it's an alien or an Ijiraq from local folklore in place of the more typical association with a demon or other entity from the Christian tradition.
